The Public Holiday feature defines calendar dates that are treated as public holidays within the organization and determines where these holidays apply.
Public holidays can apply to the entire organization or only to selected organizational units. They can also be classified as working or non-working holidays, allowing organizations to reflect different national, regional, and operational requirements.
Public Holidays affect both shift scheduling and payroll-related processing.
KEY COMPONENTS
Public Holiday: Defines a specific calendar date recognized as a public holiday.
Working Status: Determines whether the Public Holiday is considered a working or non-working holiday.
Availability: Defines where the Public Holiday applies within the organizational structure. It can apply to the entire organization or to selected organizational units.
CONFIGURATION
Public Holidays are configured in Administration → Public Holidays.
Each Public Holiday contains the following configuration:
Name
Defines the name of the Public Holiday.
Date
Defines the specific calendar date on which the Public Holiday occurs.
Description
Provides additional information about the Public Holiday when needed.
Working
Determines whether the date is counted as a working Public Holiday.
Availability
Defines where the Public Holiday applies. The holiday can be configured for the Entire organization or for selected organizational units.
The same date cannot contain multiple applicable Public Holidays for the same organizational unit. The validation takes Availability into account and evaluates the configured date for every applicable organizational unit.
Public Holidays do not have an active/disabled state. If a Public Holiday should no longer be used, its configuration must be changed or the record deleted.
ROSTER VIEW
Public Holidays are visually distinguished from regular calendar days on the roster, typically using a red color, allowing planners to easily identify Public Holiday dates while creating or reviewing schedules.
The main impact of Public Holidays on roster planning is determined by the configuration of other scheduling entities. For example, Time Off Types can define whether their recurrence includes or excludes Working Holidays and Not-working Holidays.
Similar holiday-related rules can be used by scheduling configurations to determine whether an activity, time off, or shift can be applied on a Public Holiday.
PERMISSIONS
The following permission controls the configuration of Public Holidays: Configuration SetupConfigurationSetupAllows setup and configuration of system settings.
The permission is shared across several administration areas and cannot currently be assigned separately for Public Holiday administration.
MOBILE APPLICATION
No additional App Configuration is needed for the Public Holiday feature.
Public Holiday implementation
Public Holidays provide a shared calendar classification used by multiple AristoTelos functions.
Each configured date is classified as a Working or Not-working Public Holiday. Dependent configurations can reference this classification and define their own behavior for these dates.
This allows holiday dates to be maintained centrally instead of being configured separately within individual scheduling and working-time rules.
DEPENDENCIES
Public Holiday classification is used across multiple AristoTelos configurations:
- Activity Types – recurrence can include or exclude Working and Not-working Holidays.
- Break Types – recurrence can take Working and Not-working Holidays into account.
- Employee Time Preferences – preferences can be configured according to Public Holiday classification.
- Operating Hours – recurrence can include or exclude Public Holidays.
- Request Limits – applicability can depend on Public Holiday classification.
- Requirements – recurrence can take Working and Not-working Holidays into account.
- Rostering Rules – rules can distinguish between Working and Not-working Holidays.
- Shift Popularity – evaluation can take Working and Not-working Holidays into account.
- Shift Systems – Public Holiday settings can affect which days are included in shift patterns.
- Shift Templates – shifts can be configured according to Working and Not-working Holidays.
- Time Off Types – recurrence can include or exclude Working and Not-working Holidays.
- Working Time – defines whether Working and Not-working Public Holidays are skipped when working time is evaluated.
- Working Time Models – reference the applicable Working Time configuration and define the Holiday Absence used for holiday-related absence handling.
Public Holidays therefore provide the calendar condition, while each dependent configuration determines what should happen when that condition occurs.
For example, the same Not-working Public Holiday can be excluded from one Time Off Type recurrence, included in another, skipped by a Working Time configuration, and handled by a specific Holiday Absence in the employee's Working Time Model.
This separation allows organizations to maintain one Public Holiday calendar while applying different business rules to the same holiday across planning and working-time processes.
Public Holiday Delivered Results
OVERALL OUTCOME
Public Holiday configuration results in a consistent holiday calendar that is available to planning, working-time, and downstream processing.
Once configured, holiday dates and their Working or Not-working classification are automatically available to functions that depend on Public Holidays.
ROSTER AND PLANNING RESULTS
Public Holiday dates are visually distinguished from regular calendar days on the roster, typically using a red color, giving planners immediate visibility of holidays while creating and reviewing schedules.
Configured holiday rules are reflected when applicable shifts, time off, activities, and other recurrence-based elements are evaluated.
